Pyrotechnics plane to “paint Great Yarmouth’s sky with colour” in weekly summer fireworks
- From the Dubai World Cup and Lisbon Harbour to Great Yarmouth’s Big Wednesdays – spectacular airborne fireworks and aerobatics displays are heading to the seafront this summer.
- Visit Great Yarmouth serves up the dynamic new pyrotechnic plane in its weekly summer fireworks programme to draw crowds to the seafront.
- The free Big Tuesdays at Hemsby and Big Wednesdays start next week.
- Weekly summer fireworks displays are worth £3.3m a year to Great Yarmouth’s economy – for every £1 spent on fireworks last year £22 spent in businesses on and around the seafronts.
The night sky over Great Yarmouth seafront will be painted in technicolour light next week when an airplane fires fireworks in a dramatic aerobatic and stunt display over the sea in the first of six weekly summer spectacles.
A motor glider lit by 2,000 LED lights will perform choreographed pyrotechnic displays above the sea and seafront crowds while igniting fireworks from its long wings at dusk every Wednesday through the summer holidays, with its first flight next week (July 23).
Great Yarmouth is the only UK seaside destination to offer the spectacular night sky entertainment, which will be performed by the team who thrilled crowds at the Dubai World Cup, the Formula 1 in Saudi Arabia, New Zealand and entertains at events all over Europe.
Wingtip pyrotechnics have taken years to develop.
And Great Yarmouth will witness its pioneering flight at about 9pm Wednesday, followed by a 10pm major display from the seafront
Created and performed by the only team in the world to combine formation flying, aerobatics, and nighttime airborne pyrotechnics, the sunset flight will “paint the sky with light and colour, creating breath-taking shapes” in a non-stop breathtaking show from a GROB 109B motor glider.
Visit Great Yarmouth has stepped up the wow factor this year, building on the success of Big Wednesdays in Great Yarmouth and Big Tuesdays in Hemsby in the last few years.
Asa Morrison, chief executive of Visit Great Yarmouth, said:
“Our fireworks events are hugely popular, drawing in locals and visitors, with many people enjoying displays at both locations, coming back week after week.
“This new dimension of fireworks takes the displays to a whole new level of spectacle and novelty.
“The airborne pyrotechnic display will be at dusk, which will be at 9pm for the first week and getting gradually earlier through the summer to about 8pm for the last display in August.
“Like in previous years, we will be launching the 10pm fireworks from three different seafront locations through the summer, to give people the chance to experience as much of the seafront as possible and visit perhaps new businesses and attractions that they haven’t accessed before so all our visitors have the best possible views and enjoy a memorable experience.”
Research by Destination Research UK commissioned by Visit Great Yarmouth last year revealed Big Tuesdays and Wednesdays had a substantial impact on the local economy with 13 events resulting in a net impact of £3,313,000 and creating 45 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs.
Mr Morrison said: “This achieved a return on investment of £22 spent locally for every £1 invested in the event. The whole idea is for businesses up and down the seafront area to benefit from impressive weekly events that draw people into the area to be spellbound by pyrotechnic creativity. It is not to be missed.”
Big Tuesdays at Hemsby kick off next Tuesday (July 22 at 10pm. Entertainment from 6.15pm, entertainment will be by Samba Groove Architects weaving their
Brazilian Samba-meets rave dance beats through the crowds.
The hilariously slapstick Granny Turismo will be entertaining the crowds with her unique shopping trolley dance routine on the 5th and 12th Aug.
From July 23 to August 27th at Great Yarmouth, Visit Great Yarmouth will welcome Leicestershire -based aerobatic team AeroSPARX the first team in Europe to put pyrotechnics on an aeroplane and regularly entertains crowds at events across Europe, including at Lisbon Harbour, Riga and other big events.
It has built a global reputation for its creativity and successfully staging the world’s first combined display of manned aircraft and a drone swarm at the closing ceremony of the Dubai World Cup 2023.
Pilot Rob Barsby, praised Visit Great Yarmouth for its “forward thinking.”
“Great Yarmouth really wants to shake the tree and show what can be done. It has chosen to do something different and change the narrative.”
“This is all about painting big images, flying over the sea and seafront and reflections on the water if it is a calm day. We will fly the length of the seafront.”
Fireworks can be fitted to the plane’s wingtips, wheel spats and trailing edges.
They are set off by computer when the pilot sends a 12-volt signal to a squib to light the firework according to the choreography.
