Tourism team announces new chairman

A familiar face in tourism is taking the helm as chairman of Visit Great Yarmouth.

Nathan Race, who has been General Manager at Haven Seashore Holiday Park for 14 years, has spent his working life in the leisure and tourism sector and is looking forward to supporting and guiding the future of the organisation, alongside his current role.

He takes over from outgoing chairman Lyndon Bevan, who had held the position for six years.

Nathan said: “I was born in Great Yarmouth and my first job after leaving school was working within swimming pools and leisure. Since leaving further education my working career has been within the industry. I am excited to take up this role supporting Visit Great Yarmouth.”

“My expertise is leading teams and driving successful business outcomes from a team, guest and shareholder perspective. I am therefore, looking forward to bringing my skills in support of our Chief Executive Asa Morrison, the board and most importantly our levy payers to evolve our strategy. We must continue to deliver the great things we have always delivered, but also to look at what we can do to develop for the future.

“What I love about Great Yarmouth is its charm. This new role is a great opportunity to get involved in all facets of tourism. I’m really passionate about not only the broader success of the town, but all of our various and diverse attractions.

“There are lots of proven projects still ongoing and new innovations coming for the future. It’s about what keeps Great Yarmouth in the front of peoples’ minds.”

Outside of work, Nathan keeps busy with his family and training for long distance triathlons.

Nathan recently ran the London Marathon, alongside his wife and a team from work to raise almost £8,000 for Whizz Kids, a charity that supports the empowerment of young wheelchair users.

Asa Morrison, Chief Executive of Visit Great Yarmouth, said Nathan’s career experience in the sector was a massive coup.

“Nathan has a wealth of experience having spent his entire working life in leisure and tourism. He knows how things work and his passion for the industry makes him a natural leader and advocator of everything Visit Great Yarmouth works hard to promote and deliver.”

Meanwhile, businesses have reported a great start to the season with the Easter holidays and first May bank holiday ticked off.

Mr Morrison continued: “The long Easter weekend saw the seafront football at its highest for three years and businesses such as Thrigby Wildlife and Gardens and the Pleasure Beach have reported really encouraging numbers.

“We fully expect things to stay on course for a fantastic summer ahead with day trippers and holidaymakers adding a visit to Great Yarmouth to their plans.”
