Two free festivals for Great Yarmouth
Holidaymakers from Buckinghamshire are being encouraged to head for the region’s biggest tourist resort for two major free events on consecutive weekends.
Tourism chiefs at Great Yarmouth, one of the country’s most popular holiday destinations, are looking forward to a jam-packed extended summer season buoyed by two unique festivals, which illustrate the area’s rich and varied cultural offer.
The town will be celebrating all things nautical with ships and shanty singing one weekend, followed by audacious displays of circus skills and street arts the next.
The Great Yarmouth Maritime Festival, which takes place on September 9 and 10, will see the historic South Quay transformed into a showcase for the town’s nautical heritage.
 
There will be small and tall vessels to access and explore, river cruises, family and children’s activities, exhibitions and demonstrations. There is also a fresh focus this year on shanty singing and an exciting programme of folk music.
It will be closely followed by the Out There International Festival of Circus and Street Arts, from September 16 to 17, which will bring together some of the world’s most innovative circus and street arts performers.
Visitors can expect awe-inspiring spectacles across the streets, parks and open spaces of Great Yarmouth during the festival’s 10th anniversary year.
The event will include a life-size interactive amusement arcade, giant puppets and fairy tale witches, with performers from as far away as Argentina.
Both events are being financially supported by the Greater Yarmouth Tourism and Business Improvement Area, which aims to show visitors the breadth of activities available.
Its chairman Gareth Brown said: “The children may have gone back to school in September, but the summer season in Great Yarmouth is far from over. Here are two fantastic free events taking place over two consecutive weekends, both offering something completely different. Culturally, they are poles apart.
“One is a celebration of all things maritime, while the other features some of the most thrilling and sometimes eye-watering circus and street art displays that you will see anywhere.
“It’s a great chance for a late summer holiday or weekend away with a whole range of accommodation options. Both festivals have become an integral part of Great Yarmouth’s extended season, attracting thousands of people from all over the region, including Buckinghamshire, for a fun-packed late break.
“There’s so much to enjoy in the Greater Yarmouth area, as well as on the seafront and throughout the town.”
